Safety couplings

protect your drive machines from damage due to overload by means of a lightning-fast drop in torque.

Safety couplings separate the input and output sides of a machine within a few milliseconds in the event of an overload when the transmitted torque exceeds a specified limit value. This prevents major damage to the machine, prolonged machine downtime and costly repairs. Our torque limiting clutches, which operate on the ball detent principle, are set to the desired disengagement torque and the required speed in accordance with customer specifications. They are available in various functional systems, as an angle-synchronous re-engagement variant, in a through-engagement design or as a freewheeling model.

With 360° angular synchronous re-engagement, the clutch disengages when the set limit torque is reached, the torque drops immediately. After elimination of the overload, the clutch then re-engages automatically at exactly the same point after 360 angular degrees. The clutch is ready for operation again.

In the 60° disengagement version, the clutch also disengages when the set limit torque is reached, the torque drops immediately. In this version, however, the clutch automatically re-engages after 60° at one of the directly following ball recesses after the overload has ceased and is ready for operation again. Other through-engagement versions are available at extra cost.

In the freewheeling version, the clutch runs freely without connecting the drive trains in the event of disengagement due to overload and must be re-engaged manually.

Frequently asked questions

Will safety couplings (torque limiters) work with any machine?

Safety couplings are used in a wide range of machines, for example in packaging machines, injection molding machines, milling machines, printing rollers, textile machines, robotics, production lines, automation systems, etc.

Is it possible to select a setting range other than that specified in the data sheet?

We would be pleased to offer you other setting ranges, please contact us to find out what is technically feasible.

Can safety couplings also be used at minus temperatures?

To use the clutch at minus temperatures you need special greases, as well as disc springs made of Inconel. Please always inform us before ordering in which area the coupling will be used.

What special designs are available?

For an additional charge, we are happy to offer finely balanced couplings, a sealed version that protects the coupling from dirt and fluids, other through-engagement versions, and the CTS-1, CTS-3 and CTS-4 models with keyways. Stainless steel versions and welded versions for certain products complete the range.

Do you also have mechanical switches or proximity switches in your range?

For control and regulation of the drive machine, we are also happy to offer limit switches or proximity switches to go with our safety couplings.
